HELENA
Handicap Progress
Goals
Helena is a highly skilled competitive golfer and member of the women's team and Performance Squad. She already plays at an excellent standard and is a strong scorer. Her current coaching priorities focus on refining impact conditions, increasing the consistency of centered strikes, and improving the predictability of ball starting direction. Her ultimate technical objective is to develop a reliable, controlled draw with the driver. Her current practice emphasis is on improving the quality of contact in pitch shots before transferring those improvements to longer swings.
Technical Assessment
Impact Quality & Directional Control
Overall assessment
Helena is a highly skilled competitive golfer who currently experiences inconsistencies in directional control and strike quality. The two key impact factors identified by Martin are clubface orientation at impact and centeredness of contact on the clubface. Improving these two factors is the current priority. Her coaching work is focused on increasing strike consistency, improving control of the ball's initial starting direction, and developing the technical foundations for a controlled draw.
Current technical challenges
Directional Control Improve control over the ball's initial starting direction. The desired outcome is a ball flight that starts to the right of the intended target and curves back toward it. Clubface Control Improve control of clubface orientation at impact. Strike Centeredness Make more consistent contact closer to the center of the clubface. Contact Quality Improve consistency of strike during shorter pitching movements.
Coaching priorities
Primary: Clubface control; centeredness of strike. Secondary: Ball starting direction; contact consistency; controlled draw development. Long-term application: Driver.
Current training phase
Phase 1 — Pitching Contact & Impact Control Improve contact through controlled, shortened swings. Once this becomes more consistent, Martin can progressively transfer the improvements to larger swings and eventually the driver.
Assigned Exercise
9 O'Clock Backswing — Shaft-Parallel Finish Drill
Develop improved strike centeredness, contact consistency, and clubface control through a shortened, controlled golf swing.
1. Begin in a normal pitching setup. 2. Take the club back only to the 9 o'clock position. 3. Make a controlled movement through impact. 4. Continue the follow-through until the club shaft is approximately parallel to the ground. 5. In the finish position, focus on having the sternum and belt buckle more vertically aligned. 6. Maintain balance and controlled body positioning throughout the motion. 7. Observe the quality of contact and the ball's starting direction.
“At the finish, get your sternum and belt buckle more aligned over one another.”

What Martin should observe
Is contact becoming more centered? Is clubface control becoming more predictable? Is the initial ball direction becoming more consistent? Is Helena achieving the intended finish position? Is the improvement repeatable across multiple pitch shots?
